What does the missing data banner on my report mean?

What the data coverage banner at the top of your report means, and what to do if you see one.

Written by Lily Share

Xapien draws on a range of external data providers - such as sanctions, corporate records, and media sources - to build your report. Occasionally, one of these providers doesn't respond in time while your report is running. When this happens, your report still completes, but a banner appears at the top of the report explaining which data may be missing and what to do about it.

This means you'll never receive a silently incomplete report - if coverage was affected, you'll always know.

What the banner colours mean

The banner appears in one of two colours, depending on how significant the affected source is:

  • Amber (critical) - a core source, such as sanctions or corporate records, didn't respond. We recommend re-running the report before relying on it for key decisions.

  • Teal (non-critical) - only peripheral sources were affected. The core findings of your report are unaffected.

What should I do if I see the banner?

Provider issues are usually temporary and resolve themselves within minutes. If you see the banner - particularly the amber version - simply run a new report on the same subject and context. In most cases, the new report will complete with full coverage.

If the banner appears repeatedly on the same subject, contact support using the Help widget and we'll investigate.

Dismissing the banner

You can dismiss the banner if you'd like to clear your view. When dismissed, it collapses to an icon in the report toolbar - click the icon at any time to bring the banner back. Your choice persists as you navigate around the report in the same tab.

What about exported PDFs?

The banner is also included in the PDF export, at the top of the Executive Summary. It uses the same wording and colours as the in-app banner, so anyone reading the exported report has the same visibility of any missing data.

Things to note

  • The banner only appears on reports where a provider failed mid-report - if you don't see it, your report ran with full coverage.

  • A sparse report without a banner isn't a data issue - it usually means your subject has a limited online footprint. See High profile vs Low profile subjects for more.
